A lifelong practitioner of the healing arts, Barbara has a Master’s degree in Therapeutic Herbalism and credentials in esthetics, advanced massage and aromatherapy. She is regarded as a pioneer in the wellness movement and draws on her expertise to illustrate the connection between skin health and well-being. An early adapter and now leader in holistic skin care, Barbara created Naturopathica as a way to encourage people to be active participants in their own skin health. The Naturopathica approach combines nutrition, herbal medicine and wellness rituals with clean and effective products for an immersive wellness experience.
Inspired by childhood summers with her Aunt in France, Barbara embarked on a lifelong exploration of natural healing from an early age. Her passion and knowledge were tested when her mother was diagnosed with lung cancer. After witnessing the efficacy of remedies like Lemon Balm tea to ease anxiety, Calendula cream to soothe dry skin, and Peppermint aromatherapy to quell nausea, Barbara was determined to create a place where people could improve their own well-being. She opened Naturopathica Healing Arts Center & Spa in East Hampton in 1995, and a brand was born. Today, Naturopathica has a robust collection of skin and well-being products, two celebrated flagship spas in Manhattan and East Hampton, and an impressive network of more than 400 of the world’s best Spa Partners including destinations like Canyon Ranch, The Lake Austin Spa Resort, The Spa at Terranea and Heyday Spas in New York City.
As a product architect for more than 20 years, Barbara focuses on developing holistic, clean and effective products. She chooses proven botanical ingredients like Oats, Aloe and seed oils to nourish the skin, then enriches her formulas with clean cosmeceuticals; proven dermatological actives like plant stem cells, Retinol and Glycolic Acid to deliver visible and lasting results. Her body and herbal remedies bring wellness full circle, using nervine and adaptogen herbs to relieve stress, restore sore muscles and enhance vitality.
Adding to her distinguished credential as wellness innovator, educator and product architect, Barbara is also the author of three books: Well Being (2000), Pure Skin: Holistic Beauty Basics (2005) and The Naturopathica Effect: A Holistic Approach to Skin Health, set to be published in fall 2018. Her books further reinforce Barbara’s mission to help educate consumers about natural health and beauty in new and exciting, but accessible, ways.
Most importantly, Barbara practices what she preaches, making health and wellness part of her everyday life, from growing herbal remedies in her backyard to testing treatments at her spas. Select Naturopathica products are certified by ECOCERT, the first certification body to develop standards for natural and organic cosmetics, and Barbara has ensured the brand remains cruelty free (certified by Leaping Bunny) and made in the USA. Fueled by her passion for self-care, Barbara continues to travel the globe, discovering the virtues of traditional healing practices and adapting them to create innovative products and rituals.
“The essence of beauty lies within,” Barbara says, “When we feel our best, we look our best. Beauty is an attitude, an approach to living.”
